| CELEBRATING A FANTASTIC MILESTONE | ||||
Diamond Centre of Wales continue to support MACMILLAN and hope you can join us! Celebrating their 100 years of support for people affected by cancer. In 1911, a young man named Douglas Macmillan watched his father die of cancer. His father’s pain and suffering moved Douglas so much; he founded the ‘Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer.’ Douglas wanted advice and information to be provided to all people living with cancer, homes for patients at low or no cost, and voluntary nurses to attend to patients in their own homes. Today, although the name may have changed, much of Douglas’ legacy lives on. Macmillan Cancer Support is still a source of support for people living with cancer, and is still a force for improving cancer care. As the charity enters its 100th year in 2011, local fundraising manager Debbie Jones is calling upon the people of Wales to help celebrate this fantastic milestone. ‘Macmillan’s centenary is more than just a birthday; it’s a chance for our supporters to go the extra mile, make fundraisers bigger and better, get more people involved. In 2010 Macmillan gave out 1705 grants totaling over £607,000 to help people affected by cancer in the Wales area to help with the cost of travel to and from hospital, new clothing, winter fuel bills and even to buy new bedding to enable someone to rest more comfortably. | Official opening of new Macmillan Cancer Unit, Merthyr | ||||
Macmillan Cancer Support officially opens its new cancer unit at the Prince Charles Hospital. BBC Wales Today presenter Sian Lloyd officially openned the £1.4m unit on Thursday October 28. The unit provides chemotherapy treatment facilities as well as consultation rooms and quiet areas for counseling and the fitting of prosthetics and wigs. Most of the money for the new unit was raised through a Macmillan appeal, which was supported by the Cynon Valley Leader and Merthyr Express newspapers. Local people in the South Wales valleys along with the Merthyr, Cynon and Caerphilly Macmillan Fundraising Committees raised nearly £1m in just 18 months. The remaining £400,000 came equally from the Welsh Assembly Government and Macmillan. Cwm Taf LHB has provided the land and health professionals from Velindre NHS Trust provide the service with colleagues from Cwm Taf LHB. Cath Lindley, general manager for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales said: “People affected by cancer are already benefiting from this wonderful, state of the art facility and the services available. As well as being treated in a friendly modern facility, patients don’t have to face long journeys to get their vital treatment. They also receive help and support from the Macmillan professionals and their colleagues who provide care and treatment at the unit as well as emotional and financial support.” |
